Billy and the Kids :: Grateful Mahalo

GRATEFUL-MAHALO-POSTER-MAIN-EDITION-COMP_960x.jpeg

You know what they say: “Don’t read the books if you don’t want to know.”

OK, I’ve never heard anyone actually say that, but I’ve been reading a lot of Grateful Dead material lately. I read Phil Lesh’s book, then Billy’s book, and now I’m reading Garcia: An American Life. Anyway, Billy’s book left me conflicted. On one hand, you read the book to hear the thoughts of the people involved, and then sometimes you’re sorry you did.

But whatever I may have thought of the book of the personality Billy projected through it, he has been behind the drumkit for some of my most favorite music ever. Bill Kreutzmann recently celebrated his 75th birthday with a string of three live-streamed show with his band Billy and the Kids. Two of those shows have appeared at the Live Music Archive and are definitely worth your time and I wish him nothing but the best and I wish everyday was Bill Kreutzmann’s birthday, because all of this is great.

As if Billy on drums, Reed Mathis on bass and Billy Strings wasn’t enough, how about saxophone?! No? Still not enough? How about appearances from Santana?! If that’s not enough, you’re in the wrong place. Anyway, here’s the two live sets from the Archive and some videos that I’ve been hanging out with.

Billy and the Kids (05/07/21):

“Help on The Way" and more”

“China Cat Sunflower”

“Tangled up In Blue”

Billy & The Kids ft. Carlos Santana, Billy Strings - "Scarlett Begonia's" and "Iko "Iko"

Hania Rani Live from Studio S2 (2021)

a2233793054_10.jpeg

“The full live set video was premiered on the evening before the annual Piano Day worldwide celebrations (March 29th). The motivation to make the recording of the live performances which became the release ‘Live from Studio S2’ came from the invitation from the Berlinale Film Festival.”

Hania says:

“I decided to rearrange some of my favourite songs, which I have been performing live for years. Recorded live and captured in the iconic Studio S2, one of the recording studios of Polish Radio in Warsaw. The hall is fully covered with light wood, which reminds me of other Radio Studios all around the world - like Funkhaus in Berlin for example. There is a kind of intimacy when playing the little piano in this huge and also very high venue.”

Setlist:

  1. Hawaii Oslo

  4. Buka

Important People and Facts:

The session was filmed by Rani’s long time collaborators - Mateusz Miszczyński, recorded by Agata Dankowska, mixed by Piotr Wieczorek and mastered by Zino Mikorey. Recorded live on the 4th of February 2021 in Warsaw.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 :: GrooveTV #201

Screen Shot 2021-04-16 at 12.57.17 PM.png

I have no idea who/what GrooveTV was/is, but I do know that I dig early 00’s STS9 set from The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA; 12/5/02.

I’ll be honest and say that this is not a band I know well, nor have I really followed them much beyond the little pocket of shows I’ve heard. So, I don’t know if the setlist is correct or not, but one of the YouTube comments lists:

Setlist:

Satori, ?, Grow, New song > Tap In, Baraka II: Moonsockets, ?, STS9 Ramone > Eb > Emiglio E: Circus, What is love?

You know it’s good when it includes a “?”. Some of you may know more details about this show, and I’m glad to hear them if you do. But otherwise, just enjoy.

Natalia Lafourcade :: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

natalialafourcade_ljdoyle_sq-5d78f3a865cc36f1d4a53e2dc18ec8c2bc4e78c6-s800-c85.jpeg

“Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.”

Setlist:

  1. "Soledad y el Mar"

  2. "Mi Tierra Veracruzana"

  3. "Tú Sí Sabes Quererme"

“A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.

Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. "This is your next record!" they told her.

That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.

One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.”
