Ted Hawkins :: Amazing Grace

v32805gxhep.jpeg

Ted Hawkins was an American singer-songwriter born in Biloxi, Mississipi and who was often found busking in his adopted hometown of Venice Beach, California. He toured extensively in Europe and Australia but remained largely anonymous in the United States.

Here is the elusive 1996 Janice Engel documentary in three-parts.

R.L. Burnside 1978

Screen Shot 2021-05-29 at 8.26.24 AM.png

I don’t know a thing about this footage, but I’ve watched it several times over the years and thought I’d share it with you fine people on Holiday at the Sea. It features several live performances by Burnside, two seemingly on the side of the road and one at home (?) surrounded by family (?). We do know that there are notes that the footage was filmed in Pensacola County, MS, 09/02/78.

Sorry, I don’t have the setlist for this one but we could probably figure it out pretty easily if we were so inclined. I just haven’t been.

Enjoy.

Khaira Arby Live For the Tiny Desk

khairaarby853_wide-6c0e24cc121cbb02cda660b8b0da4cfb002772e3.jpeg

I’ve been listening to the new live Khaira Arby album and I’ll tell you what: I’m a fan.

So here’s her 2011 Tiny Desk set for NPR.

If you’re not yet familiar with her, Khaira Arby is something known as “The Nightingale of Timbuktu,” while NPR calls her “the queen of desert rock.” Whatever you call her, her musical influence cannot be denied.

According to Wikipedia, “She began singing at a young age for weddings and traditional festivals, and at the age of eleven, began singing in a musical troupe from the city of Timbuktu.” Even after facing family pressure from her father and husband to abandon music, Arby persisted. And we are thankful.

Screen Shot 2021-05-15 at 3.39.26 PM.png

From the Youtube page (via Google Translate):

“J Gray, whose lyrics go far beyond the familiar "My Baby Left Me" clichés, has an extremely succinct voice - and the ability to move with his songs. Both emotionally and physically. For almost 15 years John Gray Higginbotham aka JJ Gray has been trying to implement his vision of honest, handmade southern music - with Mofro he has found the ideal backing band.”
